Working With Catalogs

Use the Catalog List to add, select and perform various operations on catalog files within CatView. All of these options are available from the context-sensitive menu for the Catalog List (right-click anywhere on the listbox) or most can be activated with a key combination when the listbox has focus.

Following is a description of the options provided:

Selecting

Catalogs can be selected or de-selected to indicate inclusion or exclusion (respectively) in the current search. Use the menu items Select All and Unselect All to apply the desired selection status to the entire list.

To select an item, simply click on it with the left mouse button or press the space bar when the Catalog List has focus. Use of the keyboard (space bar) in this way is usually performed in combination with the arrow keys to navigate between catalogs in the list.
To unselect an item, select it again to reverse the selection status.
There is no need to use the Ctrl key when selecting items.

Removing

To remove a catalog from the list, choose the Remove [filename] context sensitive menu option or use the Delete key when the list has focus.
The Remove Selected menu item (Ctrl+Del) will remove all the catalogs currently selected.

Sorting

The Catalog List can be sorted in ascending alphabetical order by selecting the "Sort" context sensitive menu option.
This puts the Catalog List into "sort mode" and will continue to sort catalogs as new ones are added. The menu will show a tick next to the word Sort when it is in sort mode. Select the menu item again to return to normal (unsorted) mode.

Display Extensions

The 'Display Extensions' menu option determines whether the name displayed in the catalog list includes the file-extension. This is a toggle menu option, meaning it can be turned on and off by selecting the menu item repeatedly. With Display Extensions on, a file named 'catalog.txt' will display in the list in full ('catalog.txt'). With Display Extensions turned off, the file 'catalog.txt' will be displayed in the list as just 'catalog'.

Viewing

The view context-sensitive menu option opens the selected catalog file in the default viewer for that file-type. If the file has the extension ".txt", for example, the default Windows setting will open the file in "Notepad".

Exploring

The Explore menu option opens up Windows Explorer and navigates to the folder in which the selected file resides. This provides convenient access to the file for actions such as renaming, deleting or accessing file properties.
