Synonyms
A Synonym allows the user to specify that a particular keyword should be considered the same as (a synonym of) one or more other words.
For example, if you are searching a catalog file for the keyword piano it may be desirable to also find similar words or foreign-language equivalents such as: pianoforte, pf, keyboard, klavier etc.
To facilitate situations such as this, CatView provides the Synonym Editor which consists of a list of Keys each with up to five synonyms
Synonym Editor
- Synonym Key - identifies the synonym. When a synonym Key matches a keyword in a search, the corresponding values will also be searched for. The Key is case-sensitive.
- Synonym Values - a list of words that the user considers to be synonmous with the Key such that a search for the Key should also find lines with any of these values. The Synonym values will take on the 'Match Case' sensitivity of the keyword.
Note that the ultimate effect of using a synonym list is similar to the boolean relationship facility in CatView and in the example above would be equivalent to effecting the following statement (if 5 keywords were available): piano OR pianoforte OR pf OR keyboard OR klavier
Working with Synonyms
Synonym List
After a search completes, CatView will place a small button to the left of any keywords that are equal to a synonym Key.
.
This button can be selected to display the Synonym List dialog (right) containing the synonym values associated with that keyword.
This dialog is non-modal - meaning that it does not have to be closed before you can continue doing other things within CatView.
Synonym pop-up hint
Another way to quickly view the synonyms associated with a particular keyword is via the pop-up 'Hint' for the keyword This can be viewed by holding the mouse briefly over the synonym keyword.
